Typical eye tracking experiments are set up as seen below in the diagram.

First the participant is made comfortable and given instructions. The experiment is then set-up and the participant is instructed to look at dots on the screen in order to calculate what point on the screen the participant is fixating at any given point.

Getting this calibration and validation correct is extremely important.
